MAE Center Personnel Provide Assistance at State Earthquake Planning Workshops

MAE Center Managing Director, Timothy Gress, (second row from front) listens to presenter at the November 7 -€“ 8, 2007 Tunica, MS earthquake planning workshop.
The MAE Center has recently expanded it support role for the Federal Emergency Management Agency's (FEMA) New Madrid Catastrophic Planning Initiative project by participating in a number of earthquake planning workshops that have been held throughout the eight states that are potentially threatened by a New Madrid earthquake. These states include Illinois, Indiana, Missouri, Kentucky, Tennessee, Mississippi, Arkansas, and Alabama. The contribution of the MAE Center to this FEMA initiative consists of a series of reports on comprehensive state-level earthquake impact analyses for the project study region. These analyses provide estimates for the expected damage and losses, caused by the occurrence of an earthquake nucleated in the New Madrid Seismic Zone, on an extensive list of infrastructure system, including buildings, bridges and utility networks. These reports serve as a basis for the development of the response and recovery plans of state emergency management agencies, state and county planners, and other agencies.

At these workshops the Center has provided assistance to its project partners (IEM, Central United States Earthquake Consortium, and FEMA) state earthquake planners, and workshop participants with the interpretation of the state-wide seismic loss modeling results produced by the MAE Center. The objective of these workshops is to provide guidance in each catastrophic response plan topic that includes: direction and control, damage assessment, first-responder mission, medical care, mass care, communications and transportation/evacuation.
The Center is utilizing FEMA's HAZUS-MH risk modeling software and its own MAEviz seismic loss modeling and visualization software to produce their state-wide earthquake loss assessments.
