Earthquake in IL April 18

WEST SALEM, Ill An earthquake centered in southern Illinois rocked people awake across the Midwest early Friday, surprising residents unaccustomed to such seismic activity.

At 4:37 a.m. Friday, April 18, 2008, initially pegged as a 5.4 earthquake, the U.S. Geological Survey revised its estimate to give it a value of 5.2. The earthquake occurred in southeast Illinois. The epicenter was reported to be six miles east of West Salem, Illinois.


This location is near the Edwards County and Wabash County line northwest of Mt. Carmel, Illinois. Although there have been no official reports of significant damage in Illinois, there have been hundreds of reports from local officials and people from Chicago to Cairo indicating that they felt the shaking.
There were five aftershocks in the 2.0 range in the first couple of hours after the earthquake, and then a sixth aftershock that measured 4.6 occurred about 10:14 a.m. Such aftershocks are common.

Edwards County
Hamilton County
Lawrence County
Randolph County
Wabash County
Initial damage assessments are continuing in impacted counties. No reports of fires, injuries or fatalities.
