Jamie Padgett, MAE Center Graduate Researcher, Awarded 2006-2007 EERI/FEMA NEHRP Graduate Fellowship

MAE Center Graduate Researcher, Jamie Padgett, has been selected as the 2006-2007 recipient of the EERI/FEMA NEHRP Graduate Fellowship. Jamie is a third year graduate student pursuing a PhD in Civil Engineering, with an emphasis in Structural Engineering, at the Georgia Institute of Technology.

The Earthquake Engineering Research Institute awards this fellowship annually to a top student in the field of earthquake hazard mitigation in a cooperative program with FEMA's National Earthquake Hazards Reduction Program. It is designed to provide an opportunity for a practicing professional to gain greater skills and broader expertise in earthquake risk reduction. Jamie was chosen from a group of extremely well-qualified doctoral candidates from throughout the US.

Jamie is currently working on MAE Center Project EE-1: Vulnerability Functions. Her research focuses on assessing the seismic vulnerability of retrofitted bridges and assessing and mitigating the seismic risk to transportation networks in the Central and Southeastern US. She is a past recipient of the National Science Foundation Graduate Fellowship Jamie plans to complete her doctoral studies in the summer of 2007, and hopes to pursue a faculty position "in order to continue to pursue research, help teach and mentor students, and support the transfer of knowledge and innovative approaches into civil engineering practice and infrastructure protection."
