Yogyakarta Earthquake Report

A new addition to the Mid-America Earthquake Center's CD-ROM Report Series "The Yogyakarta Earthquake of May 27, 2006" is now available for download at the MAE Center website.

The field report, co-authored by MAE Center Director Amr S. Elnashai, UIUC Research Assistants Sung Jig Kim and Gun Jin Yun, and former UIUC Research Assistant Djoni Sidarta, provides details of the magnitude Mw 6.3 earthquake that struck the central region of the Island of Java in Indonesia. The event, which lasted approximately 60 seconds, was responsible for more than 5,700 fatalities and over 37,000 injuries. More than 156,000 buildings in the region were completely destroyed, and the direct economic losses have been estimated at over $3B.

In addition to presenting an overview of the earthquake and losses sustained, the report includes chapters on the seismo-tectonic environment and detailed built environment losses in the affected region. Further information on geotechnical effects (landslides, liquefaction and foundations), volcanic activity in the vicinity, world heritage temple sites, and the social and economic impacts and implications of the earthquake is also included. The report employs the limited seismograph recordings to reconstruct the hazard and present the only available peak ground acceleration and accelerograms from the earthquake.

The report can be downloaded at http://mae.ce.uiuc.edu/documents/MAE_Center_Yogyakarta_Report.pdf, or you can request CD-ROM version from MAE Center headquarters by sending a request to challand@uiuc.edu.
