Newmark Endowed Chair Investiture Ceremony honors Professor Spencer
Billie F. Spencer, Professor of Civil Engineering at the University of Illinois and Damage Synthesis Coordinator of the MAE Center, was recognized and honored as a recipient of the first Nathan M. and Anne M. Newmark Endowed Chair in Civil Engineering at an Investiture Ceremony held on May 3, 2004 at the Beckman Institute.

Billie F. Spencer
Billie F. Spencer, Professor of Civil Engineering at the University of Illinois and Damage Synthesis Coordinator of the MAE Center, was recognized and honored as a recipient of the first Nathan M. and Anne M. Newmark Endowed Chair in Civil Engineering at an Investiture Ceremony held on May 3, 2004 at the Beckman Institute.
Professor Nathan M. Newmark was one of the world preeminent civil engineers and a former Head of the Civil Engineering Department at the University of Illinois. Friends and family gradually built an endowment in his honor and it reached the level where the Chair can be awarded. Previously Bill held the Newmark Professorship. Professor Spencer award was announced in February 2004 by the Civil Engineering Department Head, Nicholas P. Jones.
Currently Professor Spencer is the Coordinator for the Damage Synthesis Thrust Area of Research within the MAE Center. He is also the principal investigator of the National Science Foundation George E. Brown Network for Earthquake Engineering Simulation (NEES) system integration project, which is the nation first engineering cyber infrastructure initiative. Prior to joining the University of Illinois in 2001, he was on the faculty at the University of Notre Dame for 17 years. He is a graduate of the University of Missouri-Rolla and obtained his M.S. and Ph.D. in theoretical and applied mechanics from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.
