Winners Chosen in MAEviz Mini-Workshop Competition
February 2007
Attendees at this year's MAE Center Annual Meeting battled for top honors in a MAEviz Mini-Workshop competition aimed at providing MAEviz programmers valuable feedback about the software. Participants were divided into teams, and then each team was subsequently assigned one of three scenario events (Charleston Bridges, Memphis Buildings, and Istanbul Buildings) to run in the MAEviz program.
For the Charleston Bridge 7.3 Mw Scenario, teams were asked to perform an analysis of 340 bridges in the Charleston region using recently developed bridge fragility curves and damage-functionality relationships for bridges. Members of the winning team, led by Mary Beth Hueste (TAMU) included EAB member Jim Harris (J.R. Harris & Co.), and students Bora Gencturk (UIUC), and Camilo Phillips (UIUC).
The winners of the Memphis Buildings 7.7 Mw Scenario were EAB Chair Bob Hanson, students Kursat Kinali (GATECH), Liora Sahar (GATECH), and former student Erdem Karaca (USGS). The team was lead by doctoral student Muthu Subrahmanyam (GATECH). In this scenario, participants were asked to evaluate the building stock in Memphis and Shelby County, Tennessee and to provide preliminary recommendations for intervention given a set dollar amount available for retrofit installations.
Teams assign to the Istanbul Buildings Scenario 7.5Mw were asked to undertake a seismic risk assessment of approximately 17,000 buildings in the Zeytinburnu District of Istanbul, Turkey, using MAE Center building fragility curves and MAE Center building fragility mapping for Turkish building inventory. Shirley Dyke (WUSTL) led her teammates, ISAB member Ian Friedland (FHWA), students Jong-Wha Bai (TAMU) and Sung Jig Kim (UIUC) to victory for this scenario event.
