MAE Center Annual Meeting

The Mid-America Earthquake Center held its Annual Meeting February 15-17, 2007 at the Indian Lakes Resort, Bloomingdale, Illinois. Principal Investigators and Research Assistants from MAE Center institutions were joined by stakeholders and members of the Center's Executive Advisory Board and Industrial/Stakeholder Advisory Board for the three-day meeting.

The Annual Meeting began Thursday, February 15, with advisory board meetings, diversity council meeting, and test bed coordination meetings, followed by an evening reception. On Friday, February 16, a welcome address to the group was given by Center Director Amr Elnashai, followed by his presentation on the Center's Current Status and Future Plans. Deputy Director Jerome Hajjar gave a presentation on "Interdisciplinary Integration: Achievements and Challenges", Bill Spencer continued with "MAEviz-Lead Graduation" and Director of Business Development, Timothy Gress, spoke on the "Center's Financial Independence: Progress and Requirements". Concurrent program coordination meetings were held during the morning and Ahmed Elgamal presented "Information Technology Applications for Earthquake Engineering Research" over lunch. Also during lunch, the awards for the Best Poster Competition were given. The winner of the 2007 Best Poster Award, voted by attendees, was Joshua Steelman for his poster "Systemic Validation and Capstone Scenario in the Memphis Testbed (MTB) Project." Joshua works with Jerome Hajjar on the MAE Center research project Memphis Testbed RM-3.

The group reformed for plenary sessions. Amr Elnashai and Jerry Hajjar led the Test Beds and Uncertainty Management Plenary Session, followed by Bill Spencer and Shirley Dyke leading the hands-on MAEviz Mini-workshop. A banquet dinner for all participants was held in the evening.

On Saturday, February 17, plenary sessions continued. Jerry Hajjar and Bill Spencer led the discussion with the Stakeholders presenting on "MAEviz - Impressions and Requirements" followed by student presentations. Julia Melkers presented the Center's Evaluation Status and Plans. At lunch, awards were given to the winners of the MAEviz mini-workshop competition. Summary and closing remarks by Amr Elnashai closed the general session of the Annual Meeting. Later in the afternoon, the Executive Advisory Board and Industrial Stakeholder Advisory Board met for a closed session before briefing the Leadership Team.
