Seismic activity and maps of the region.

The geologic structures related to the causes of earthquakes in the New Madrid Seismic Zone lie deeply buried by sedimentary deposits.  Ongoing geophysical studies are revealing these hidden features, enabling residents of the region to better prepare for future earthquakes.

The 1995 earthquake which struck Kobe, Japan resulted in the loss of over 5,000 lives and billions of dollars in property damage.  However, large parts of the United States are also subject to large magnitude earthquakes --earthquakes that could be far more powerful than the Kobe quake!  Although we tend to think of California and Alaska as the places where most of our earthquakes occur, the fact is that the central U.S. has been the site of some very powerful earthquakes.
