Earthquake Lesson Plans-Elementary Schools
Students will be able to:
- Identify by modeling, the Earth's structure, namely the core, mantle, and crust.
- Identify by experimentation and demostration the forces within the Earth that cause constant changes on our Earth's surface-earthquakes.
Concepts taught: know the natural processes that effect the Earth.
Choose a disaster and answer the following questions:
- Read about your disaster. List what happens.
- Locate and shade in the area on a US map where this disaster is most likely to occur.
- Illustrate your disaster.
- Investigate a real occurence of your chosen disaster. Fill out an investigative report.
- Prepare a list of items you might need for your disaster safety kit. Also include where you should go in case of a disaster at home or at school.
- Decide whether your family is prepared for a disaster. Tell why or why not.
Explain motions, transformations, and locations of materials in the Earth's lithosphere and interior. For example, describe the movement of the plates that make-up the Earth's crust and the resulting formation of earthquakes, volcanoes, trenches, and mountains.
The following activities can help students get ready to ride out an earthquake. Unlike other natural disasters there is no warning of earthquakes. One could hit today, tomorrow or next week. We cannot predict...but we can prepare!
