Teaching Modules

Teaching Modules for Non-Technical Majors

This project is based on the premise that earthquake engineering can be extended to a large undergraduate audience far beyond the students majoring in civil engineering or geosciences. This audience is made up of thousands of liberal arts and business majors who enroll in earth science courses each year to fulfill curriculum requirements. By disseminating an earthquake engineering teaching module to schools and departments teaching general earth science courses, many future government officials, business leaders and other decision-makers of the region will become acquainted with earthquake hazard mitigation issues.
The IRIS consortium already provides the geosciences portion of such a curriculum. Complementing this material, this MAE Center project has concentrated on creating a module addressing earthquake engineering, including mitigation and loss estimation.
