MAE Center regional analysis employed at the FEMA Regions IV and VI workshops
The Mid-America Earthquake (MAE) Center recently attended two regional
emergency planning workshops hosted by the FEMA Regional offices for Regions
VI and IV, respectively. The first was held April 28-30, 2009, in Little
Rock, Arkansas, and the second was held May 4-5, 2009, in Atlanta, Georgia.
The MAE Center provided earthquake impact assessments for both of these
critical planning workshops which included assessments for the States of
Arkansas (VI), Tennessee (VI), Kentucky (VI), Mississippi (VI), and Alabama
(VI). The Region VI workshop began with a Senior Leaders Meeting which
focused on briefing senior planning personnel from various agencies on the
scenario and impact assessments completed by the MAE Center and our project
partners from Virginia Tech (VT) and the George Washington University (GWU).
Subsequently, numerous plenary sessions were held to discuss various aspects
of emergency response, many of which referenced MAE Center results in the
planning process. The MAE Center had an opportunity to present its work
earthquake impact assessment models and results at the Region VI workshop.
This presentation also helped familiarize workshop attendees with the
planning scenario and ask questions of the modeling team. The ensuing
workshop also utilized MAE Center/VT/GWU impact assessments for a New Madrid
Seismic Zone event. The above photo was provided by FEMA Region IV and shows
Lisa Cleveland, Technical Project Manager, presenting at the Region IV
Workshop.
