Graduate Teaching Module I

Putting a Face on Earthquakes: The Human Side of Earthquake Disasters - A Curriculum for Engineering Students

By: David Gillespie and Karen Robards

This curriculum is designed to:

1. Promote understanding of the human responses to earthquake disasters, and

2. Encourage active personal and professional involvement in minimizing the damage they create.

Descriptions of the ways humans have historically explained disasters suggest different ways of viewing the problem and different actions that might be taken. The four conceptual stages of disasters used by social scientists are described, with detailed examples of corresponding activities. Information on why and how to become involved as an advocate for earthquake safety is emphasized. The curriculum uses a PowerPoint presentation format. Extensive notes are included for instructors, as are suggestions for outside speakers and interactive, in-class exercises. A brief bibliography is also furnished. Curriculum can be broken into various lengths, ranging from six 50 minute sessions to three 90 minute sessions.
