Eldherhostel Tour

Twenty University of Illinois’s Continuing Education Intergenerational Elderhostel participants and their grandchildren visited the Mid-America Earthquake Center on June 30, 2000. They were given a tour of the MAE Center and the testing facility in the Newmark Civil Engineering Laboratory to view ongoing research projects in earthquake hazard mitigation. The tour started with a brief overview of the laboratory and its history, and continued with viewing current tasks, including the testing of pre-corroded concrete columns, testing of shear walls, and the testing of large pre-stressed beams. The children showed particular interest in the shaking table and the model buildings currently being tested for use in the Center’s museum display.
